Just a sampling, in no order. Notice the repeating patterns.
Kermit Roosevelt didn’t like his name. Hard to believe now
that we support fundamentalists, but before Carter some, such as Roosevelt,
thought Socialism the antidote to Communism. Unless they were nationalizing.
Stooge is a subset of chump. Some of them chumped their
handlers, at least for a while.
Kennedy signed off on Diem as senator and then discarded him
as president, another common pattern.
CIA has a wonderful apologia for supporting Ho Chi Minh at the end or WWII; it doesn’t mention that we were bombing Vietnam into starvation from our bases in China and aircraft carriers at the same time. As so often, in effect if not explicitly in support of the Vietnamese rebellion against the Japanese and French.
Another pattern is recruiting the loyal stooge to the charismatic leader.
